THE BIG KAHUNA CUP – LEAGUE PLAY
UPDATED FOR SPRING 2026
The Big Kahuna Cup League is the ultimate in weekly mini golf fun! You and your Teammate will compete each week against a random team. You will receive points for the Win / Loss / Tie PLUS your combined score will count towards your overall rankings.
Please don’t let the rules/guidelines below confuse you – we are here to have a great time but want to be sure everyone knows the rules before the Season begins.

Here's How It Works:
HEAD-TO-HEAD POINTS
+ AVG SCORE BONUS
= TOTAL POINTS / SEASON RANKING
Head-To-Head Matchups

-
Win = 4 points
-
Tiebreaker Win = 3 points
-
Tiebreaker Loss = 2 points
-
Loss = 1 point

Tiebreakers: We don’t believe in Ties here at Surf’s Up , so for any and all ties it will be a One Hole Playoff (Hole 18) with Closest To The Hole on the first shot as the second tiebreaker.
Average Score Rankings Bonus

Each week your Team will also be ranked based on an Average of your Combined Team Scores (avg of your best 5 scores)

At the end of the Season, each team will receive Bonus Points based on their overall Scoring Performance Ranking.

1st Place = 18 Bonus Points
2nd Place = 16 Bonus Points

And so on…
THE WEEKLY FORMAT
Week 1 The Opening Wave Standard Play
Week 2 Tiki Tandem Best Ball
Week 3 High Tide Standard Play
Week 4 Battle Of The Sexes Mid-Season Fun
Week 5 Rogue Waves Scramble
Week 5 Sharing The Wave Alternate Shots
Week 6 The Sunset Ride Standard Play
Week 8 Playoffs / Championship
Special Notes

-
Alternates: Each team may have 1 Alternate for 2 Weeks only. The team will receive a 3-stroke penalty (total Team Score) to avoid bringing in “Ringers”.
-
No Alternates for The Championships
-
Bonus Rides Each Week that your team comes in a Team “Costume” or uniform, you will receive Free Practice Passes to play another time during that week.
-
Rainouts: In the case weather causes us to close on League Night, we will reschedule that same week on Thursday Night.
FORMAT DEFINITIONS

Standard Format: Each player plays their own ball for all 18 holes. The total number of combined strokes determines the score. Lowest score wins.

Best Ball: Each teammate plays the hole individually. The lower of the two scores is recorded as the team score for that hole for each player.

Scramble: Both teammates tee off. Choose the better shot, then both play from that spot. Repeat until the hole is finished. Record the team’s total strokes per hole.

Alternate Shots: Because this format plays very quickly, you will be playing two rounds on Alternate Shot Week.
-
Round 1: Teammates take turns hitting the same ball. One tees off, the other takes the next shot, alternating until the hole is completed. Record total strokes as the team score.
-
Round 2 – Match Play: Play is same as above, but if your team wins the hole, you receive 1 point. At the end of the round, the Team with the higher points can deduct the difference between their score and their opponents.
-
For example: During the first round Team A wins by 2 strokes (92-90). During Match Play, Team A wins 7 holes (8pts) and Team B wins 11 (11pts). Team B can then subtract 4 points from their Round 1 scores.
-
Final Score: Team A = 90 / Team B = 88
-
DIVISIONS
We’ve learned that putting all teams in one division created a conflict with strength of schedule whereas some teams had much easier competition than others.
With that, we’ve decided to create two divisions.

Here’s How It Works
-
After Week 2, all teams will be ranked.
-
We will then divide Teams into the two divisions based on their ranking using a Snaking Format.
-
Team #1 = Sunrise Division
-
Team #2 = Sunset Division
-
Team #3 = Sunset Division
-
Team #4 = Sunrise Division
-
And so on…
-
-
For the remaining weeks, you will be matched up and ranked against Teams in your division.

WEEKLY PLAY RULES

General Play Rules
-
Play Order: Players from each team alternate. Player Team 1, Player Team 2, and so on. The team with the lowest score on the previous hole tees off first.
-
Tee Off: All players must tee off from behind the first paver.
-
Flags: Must remain in the hole at all times.
-
Stroke Count: Each stroke counts, including accidental taps, unless it was on the tee and does not advance past the first paver.
-
Max Strokes per Hole: 6 strokes max per player. If not holed by stroke 6, record a 6 and move on.
-
Out of Bounds: If a ball leaves the course or lands in water, place it back at the point of exit and add 1 penalty stroke.
-
Stuck Ball: If your ball gets stuck against a wall or in an obstacle, you can move it up to one putter-head length away from the obstacle (no closer to the hole) with no penalty.
-
Interference: If a player interferes with another player’s shot, in any way, they receive a one stroke penalty, and the initial player can retake their shot.
-
Equipment: Players can bring their own putters; however Surf’s Up Mini Golf balls must be used. The Home Team chooses their colors first.
-
Scoring: The Home Team will keep score Electronically (digital scorecard) while the Visiting Team will keep score on the paper Scorecard. The Paper Scorecard will record individual players, however the Digital Scorecard will be for just the Team Name and the combined score.
Let's Have Some Fun!!!
